The IOW Highland Pipes & Drums is a new musical venture for the Isle of Wight. Formed in the latter part of 2018 the band is still in its infancy, but growing in numbers rapidly. The idea of a pipe band on the island first came about some time earlier when the current Pipe Major John Brodie was approached by a few individuals seeking to learn to play the bagpipes. After a short time John invited a number of other pipers along to assist in the tuition including Mick Barnard & Bob Gladdis and as word spread, so did the numbers. With the Island already having a small contingent of individual pipers, who were regularly in touch with one another, networking was quite straight forward and the whisperings of a band began to form. We decided to form the band officially before taking part in The Battles O'er Event marking the centenary of the end of the first World War at which the band played the 3/4 retreat march "The Battles O'er" at 6am to mark the signing of the armistice, along with thousands of other pipers and pipe bands around the globe.
From that point the band has grown more in numbers, with both accomplished pipers and people wishing to learn. We now have around 7 student pipers at various levels of progression, and around 7/8 experienced pipers. We also have the beginnings of a Drum Corps which we hope to grow over the coming season. To date we have been self funded, with members financing their own uniform items, learning aids and instruments, however the hope is eventually to make this opportunity accessible to all with an interest, without being subject to the initial expense, which for some might prove to be a difficult commitment, through sponsorship and income from performances it is hoped the band will establish itself with a full uniform and be able to offer the basic learning necessities to its new members in the near future.
For anyone wishing to find out how they may be able to help, please contact us to learn more.
We hope the IOW Highland Pipes & Drums will grow to be a popular feature of local events, to showcase some of the traditional music of Scotland that is enjoyed around the world. With members ranging in experience from complete beginner to competition standard, aged from 11 years and up, if you are interested in joining the band, or to discuss a booking, please use the links on this site to get in touch, or alternatively connect with us via our Facebook page.
